Local History Stories

In an attempt to show the usefulness of the census when researching local and family history, I have added some short essays (in revised form) that I submitted during the course of my studies. They largely deal with working class occupations and poverty in the south of England.

I have added the following essays not in the belief that I say anything new, merely to add a little context to 19th century family history research. They have all been heavily edited in an attempt to make them less 'academic', hopefully making them less dry and more reader friendly. Sadly, I have also had to remove some really great photographs due to copyright issues, but hope that doesn't make them any less interesting. They are all in PDF format and will open in a new window. I have also added some links to websites that may provide further information if you find the subject matter interesting. If you wish to make a comment or ask a question about any of the essays please email me or visit Lines of Descent on Facebook.

If you are interested in the assisted emigration of former dock workers as discussed in the Landport essay, more information can be found at:

For anything else ship related just go to the homepage of this very good site:

For all things maritime (Royal Navy or Merchant fleet) another good (if a bit bland) site is Len Barnett's British Maritime site:

A very useful source for 19th century Portsmouth as it details street names, schools, churches etc. is the Portsmouth Encyclopaedia, compiled by Alan King, Portsmouth City Libraries, Online Edition 2006. Downloadable from:
www.portsmouth.gov.uk/learning/8566.html

If you are interested in the history of Portsmouth, then the History in Portsmouth website is worth a look, as it contains 'a collection of essays, stories and lists about people, places and events that make up a small part of the history of portsmouth'.

In addition 'History in Portsmouth' have a site dedicated to the memorials to be found in Portsmouth.
